Random Produce stuff

Found something at the Westgate Shaws that I hadn't seen before (or at least haven't seen since I've delved into the coupon world)-- discounted produce. I got some great deals on summer squash that looked perfectly fine. They also had some fancy lookin' bell peppers and cucumbers. It can be challenging to find good deals on produce, so I was pretty psyched about that.

Sadly on the other hand, the 3 pound bag o' Cuties that I swear I saw the other day at a Shaw's for $3.99 was instead "on sale" for $5.99. And my $.55 coupon did not double. Good things those clementines are so tasty, or I'd be peeved!

Another great place to check regularly at Shaws is the area in the back by the double swinging doors. There's usually some day-old bread for good prices, cakes, Chanukah candles-- you never know what you're going to find back there. Fun times!

Under the wire

So for the first time, this week I came in at around $40 under budget for groceries. I'm still not sure how it happened, except we didn't need of those big budget-busters this week, like diapers (thanks to the Rite Aid P&G deal, we're set on those for awhile) or the husband's fancy local coffee, and I didn't indulge my goat cheese addiction this week. Granted, we have a generous grocery budget, which includes stuff like diapers and other household stuff, and I eat mostly produce and expensive stuff that doesn't have wheat or cow's milk or food coloring in it, so I'm guessing our grocery budget probably looks pretty bloated compared to other frugalistas out there. But one thing I'm trying to learn is that the only person I can really compare my own progress to is... that's right, me. So from the last time I tracked our spending before my coupon lust began, when we spent over $800!!! on groceries, we've made awesome progress. We'll probably never have a $50 a week grocery budget, and that just has to be okay.

I'm also learning not to try and jump in on every great deal out there. There are some good catalina deals this week at Shaws, for example, but I'm restraining myself. If you want to learn all about them, go here. These ladies (and perhaps even a few gents) will amaze you. But there's really nothing we need from these deals this week, or even anything we'll need in the weeks to come, so I'm sitting out. There are some good deals at Shaws this week that I'll partake in, like free Izze's sparkling drinks when you print them here, (these will double, making them free or even giving you overage if you're lucky) and reasonably priced Newman's own pasta sauce when you print these which will also double at Shaws.

But other than that, I'm laying low. I like the feeling of under budget.

Cuties Oranges coupon

One of the most rare of the coupons is the fresh produce coupons. I almost deleted this email with a Cuties orange coupon today when it came into my spam box-- horrors! Anyways, check these out. I noticed they had the 3 pound bags at Shaws,I think for $3.99 where the $.55 coupon would double giving you a juicy (sorry, I can't help myself) $1.10 off. Plus these oranges are delicious-- they're seriously the crack of citrus.

Tip-- if you click your backspace button of your browser thrice times after printing the first one, it should let you print another coupon.

Don't go changin'....

You may have noticed that the layout of my blog keeps changing. Please bear with me-- I got some feedback that the old background, while pretty, was a bit hard on the eyes. So I'm experimenting-- and in the experimentation I managed to lose the basic layout that I had. So, keep coming back to my chameleon blog. And speaking of blog backgrounds, if I was ballsier, I'd go with one of the "dark fantasy" layouts from this designer.

Whole Foods Sale and Coupon Match-ups, 2/24 to 3/2

A lot of the same deals from last week, except no free yogurt. Fortunately my refrigerator is bursting with free Oikos-- which by the way, you can then enter the extremely challenging to read codes from the yogurt tops here to get more free stuff.

But I digress. Thanks to Money Saving Maine-iac for spotting some deals that I missed. Here's the match-ups:

• ThinkThin Bars-- 4 for $5, use $.50 off coupon

• Nature's Path Waffles Organic Buckwheat Wildberry, 2 for $5, use $1.50 off two from Jan/Feb Whole Deal, or go here

• Imagine Foods Soup, 2 for $4, use $.75 off two from Jan/Feb Whole Deal, stacked with this $1 off 2, making these 2 for $2.25!

• Method Laundry Detergent, $7.99. Use $1 off any Method product from Jan/Feb Whole Deal, stacked with this, makes it $4.99 (Usually $10.99!)

• Muir Glen Organic Pasta Sauce, 2 for $6. Use $1 off 1 here.

• Seventh Generation Paper Towels, $1.79. Use $1 off 1 or $2 off 2 here.

• Terra Chips, Sweets & Beets, 2 for $5. Use $1 off 1 from here, here, or here.

• Kiss my Face Olive Bar Soap, 4 oz 3 for $7.50, 8 oz 3 for $10. Use $1 off here.

• Goodbelly Probiotic Fruit Drink Blueberry Acai, 2 for $6. Use $1.50 off here.

Have fun and remember when something is advertised as "2 for $6", you don't have to buy 2 to get the deal.

Too Legit To Quit~ earning extra $ on the interwebs

Part of my experiment this year with saving money is also trying to find ways to make a little extra cash. I do have a work from home day job that pays pretty well, but I don't get a lot of hours right now. So I've been spending some time sitting around in my mom jeans, scouring the internet for legitimate opportunities to earn a few extra bucks here and there. My research is far from complete, but I wanted to share a few ways things that I've found.

Pinecone Research. This is a survey company-- there are tons of these out there but this is my favorite so far. Why? They only send you surveys that you're already qualified for-- you don't have to answer questions for ten minutes only to find out you don't qualify for the survey. Why else? They pay a flat rate of $3 per survey, and it's in the mail within days. Or if you prefer you can use Paypal and get the $ even quicker. The downsides--they only accept new users at certain times, and I've only received a survey every few weeks.

Youdata. This site pays you to watch brief adds. You fill in as much personal info as you're comfortable with to help them know which adds to send you. They don't bombard you with annoying emails-- you simply go to their site whenever you want to see if you have any ads available. Every Friday they put whatever earnings you've accrued into your paypal account. The downside-- very infrequent adds. I've made about $2 so far with this. Their main target demographic is mommy bloggers in Texas. Cool idea though.

Swagbucks. This is cool and simple. It's a search engine, powered by Google. You just download their search engine and you earn swagbucks, seemingly randomly, from internet searches you do. You can also earn points by shopping online, taking special offers, recycling cell phones or mp3 players, or pimping out your friends to join under your name, as I've so subtly done here. You can redeem points for gift cards or paypal cash. The downside-- none really-- I generally only get one or two Swagbucks from searching each day, but I try and just forget about them until they add up.

MyPoints. Okay, so you can't get cash at this site, but you can get giftcards to Amazon, Target, and more. There are numerous ways to earn points here, from printing coupons (sweet!) to using their search engine (crappy), shopping online and taking surveys or special offers. The easiest (yet slowest) way to earn Mypoints is by clicking on email links they send you. I've been using this for a few months and am a little past being able to redeem for a $25 gift card, but I'm saving up for a $50.

I'm exploring a few other ways, like writing content for ehow (as evidenced by my new link to my articles there) and I'll let you know how that goes.

What ways do you have of bringing in a little extra cash? Has anybody tried mystery shopping? Side jobs? Answering those creepy Craigslist adds in search of lactating women? Tell me all about it.

Windowpain

A few weeks ago we were leaving BJ's and a nice lady approached us asking us if we'd like a free $25 BJ's giftcard. Well duh! All we had to do was be the recipients of a free window inspection. No obligation to buy-- we'd even get some free energy-saving tips to boot. At this point, while I was having a tiny o, my husband was shaking his head and saying "no thanks." I gave him the devil woman death glare and we huddled. "Fine, but you have to deal with the inspection," he said. A bargain had been struck. For weeks I fantasized about that giftcard. Maybe it would arrive at the same time my Rite Aid P&G Visa card would, and I'd use the two together to create grocery budget magic. I waited by the phone like a giddy teen. Finally, the window people called. Unfortunately there was a small glitch-- my husband and I both had to be home during the inspection. "Why is that?" I asked Jose, the inspection coordinator. "It's our policy to have both property owners present," he replied.

Busted.

I scheduled anyways for Saturday morning. Husband was not ecstatic but was relatively docile about it. Then I started feeling guilty. We have no intention of replacing our windows at this time-- was it wrong to go through the process in lusty pursuit of a BJ's giftcard? We talked about it and neither my husband nor I was feeling very excited about spending 60-90 minutes on our Saturday morning with strangers tromping through our toy-strewn home putting the hard sell on us. Reluctantly, I cancelled our inspection.

So no BJ's giftcard for me. And yet, unlike our old, filthy windows ("who cleans your windows?" Jose had asked during the initial phone call. "Uh... the condo association?" I improved.) I felt somewhat virtuous about the whole thing. We did the right thing, and instead of getting pitched to I got to go to dance class this morning.

What would you do? Is it somewhat naughty to accept a giftcard or other reward in that type of situation when you know you're not even mildly interested in the product?

And the winner is...

Megan! Just to be super cute, I had my kiddo pull the winning name from the basket. Of course, he triumphantly ripped it in half shortly thereafter, as captured in the photo above. Congratulations to Megan. We'll arrange to get you the exciting $10 gift card promptly.

Big Lots...

After a mostly quiet day at home with the kiddo, with a playdate interspersed with toddler drama (think baby rumble!) to break up the day, I decided to check out Big Lots. Nestled in the Westgate shopping center between Little Ceasars and Mardens, and just a hop skip and a jump away from Fashion Bug, I had no idea what politically incorrect gems awaited me inside.

First the good deals-- there was some pretty cheap toilet paper, although one could probably do better with sales + coupons. I spotted some organic Yogi tea for $2~ I'm pretty sure these go for about $6 a box at Whole Foods. And Earth's Best baby food (and some other brands as well) for $.30-- usually you're lucky if you can get these for $.80 a jar. There was a limited selection-- mostly just some banana/oatmeal mixture, but still! Other grocery highlights were Popeye Spinach cans that looked like they'd been rusting on the shelves since 1953 and Dora the Explorer corn niblets.

Also a decent selection of toys, although some strange stuff too. A squirrel in a raincoat? Really? A Fisher Price rotary phone toy? What strange time warp had I entered into?!? I also spotted a Handy Manny ice cream cart with what I swear was a Woody Allen action figure.

Next stop, diapertown. A brand of diapers that I couldn't even find through Google called Comfees that were "cloth-like." I'm not even sure what that means. The strangest part was that all the large and extra large sizes featured African American babies. Was Comfees trying to say that they make bootylicious diapers?

Around the next corner lay the Delta Burke underwear section. Who knew Delta had been busy since Designing Women? This was all almost too much to bear, and I was nearing the exit. But then I spotted the book section I'd missed on the way in-- $3 for all the obscure books you could want. I almost purchased an amazing little book called Emily's Good Nightmares, a colorful thing which seems to be about a gothic girl and a cat on an acid trip, but I decided to stick to my rule of no impulse purchases. Buried (hidden?) under other books was a book called Vagina Warriers by Eve Ensler of Vagina Monologue fame, which in a random twist boasts a picture of my auntie on the cover. In another corner was "How to Get Pregnant." Who knew such salaciousness could be found in Big Lots?

No manufacturer coupons at Big Lots from what I could tell. But they are accepting this pretty little thing for 20% off your entire purchase this Sunday. You have to sign up to become a member of their BuzzClub, but still!

Cheap Finds at the Christmas Tree Shop

The babe and I jaunted out to the Christmas Tree Shop this afternoon after my mama-in-law let me know about the Bob's Red Mill goodies she spied there. All week I've been forgetting it's February vacation week-- I keep wondering why the grocery stores and other shops are so packed with (other) slightly harried looking women and their kiddos.

Anyways, though I vowed not to buy anything as I'm still recovering from last week's Frugal F&*!up, I used the opportunity to check the place out, particularly for good grocery deals. The Bob's Red Mill was indeed priced very well-- there were lots of varieties of goodies, from gluten and dairy-free pancake mix to brownie and cookie mix, gluten-free oats, etc. In fact there were so many different types I don't remember what they cost, just that I know there were some good deals, I'm guessing at least a dollar or two below what you'd find them for in most grocery stores. I also noticed some Newman's Own cookies for $1.99 (saw them later today at Hannaford for $3.99), some Indian food packets similar to Tasty Bite (yum!) for under $2, and rice cakes for $1 a package. I also saw a brand of salad dressing named "Fanny's" which just makes me giggle.

I of course had to sidle up to Customer Service to find out what the store's coupon policy is-- the only item they accept coupons for is their health and beauty items. Which could actually be a pretty decent deal as they have a fair selection of health and beauty items, and just off the top of my head I noticed, for instance, that Olay body wash was about $3 cheaper there than at Rite Aid.

My palms were starting to itch to spend some money, so I shortened our trip before the urges could take over, but it was a fun little field trip as I hadn't been there for ages. And I'm still smiling a little about the Fanny's salad dressing.

Bob's Red Mill flours and mixes at Christmas Tree Shoppe

My fabulous mother-in-law let me know that she spied a new shipment of Bob's Red Mill flours and mixes, which are gluten and dairy-free, at the Christmas Tree Shoppe yesterday. I feel a "field research" trip coming on... will let you know what I find!

Cheapish Muir Glen Diced Tomatoes at BJ's

Whilst cavorting with the morbidly obese at BJ's today, I noticed a decent deal on Muir Glen organic diced tomatoes. A six-pack goes for $6.99, and BJ's has a coupon for $3 off (on a rack of coupons found not too far from the front door). I'm not 100% positive but I believe you could combine this with the Muir Glen $1 off 2 coupon found here.. This would make them $2.99 for a six-pack of 14.5 oz organic tomatoes.

Giving it up~ a Giveaway

I've been thinking a lot about frugality and generosity, and how to make them not so mutually unexclusive (is that too many double negatives? I just got lost...). I think of myself as generous in some ways, like with compliments, letting cars go ahead of me (am I really in that much of a rush to get to mommy group or the grocery store? Come on now.), and occasionally with my time. However when it comes to gifts that require the giving up of my Scrooge Purse (thanks hubster!), I'm less generous. My husband is very generous, which mostly I think is amazing, but occasionally I find myself resisting his generosity because it gets in the way of my frugality. So I'm wondering how to make the two coexist more in myself.

In that spirit, and in the spirit of Valentine's Day, and my kiddo's first birthday (he almost was a Valentine's Day baby-- had I not had to push for FOUR HOURS he would've been!) I'm going to offer up the $10 gift card to the Maine Mall (or other ggp affiliated malls) that I received this morning.

Disclaimer: In the past when I've been a recipient of these mall gift cards, they've been a little tricky-- there are some weird rules about using them in combination with other credit cards or cash, so enter at your own risk.

You may enter up to thrice times. How to enter:

* Become a follower of this blog and leave me a comment letting me know you've done so.
* Leave me a comment with your thoughts on the intersection of frugality and generosity.
* Post a link to my giveaway on your blog.

This giveaway will end next Friday, February 19th, at 11:59p.m.

And congrats to Eunice, who by default won my little Oikos coupon giveaway!

Purple Piggy Bank

I got my new little savings account funded today-- and it already has $118.40 in it. Woohoo! This is where it came from:

$53 in coins that's been sitting around on our kitchen counter
$50 1% cash back check from our credit card rewards
$12 from doing online surveys
$1.40 from redeemed bottles/cans
$2 from selling my old laptop to Gazelle. (this was a pretty easy transaction but I was a little disappointed as they quoted that the laptop was worth $40 but when they checked it out they'd only pay me $2 for it. However, it was just sitting around collecting dust and taking up space that could be used for storing COUPONS).

So little nooks and crannies of cash do add up. I'll keep you updated as the piggy bank grows.

Frugal F&*!up

Welcome back to the Frugal F&*!up!

This week, a triumvirate of events collided to sabotage my budget:

1. I went for the gold. I got my Rite Aid total up to $100 (counted before coupons-- will give you the actual totals later) so I could get the $35 Visa card back before the promotion ends this weekend.

2. That temptress, cheap laundry detergent, lured me in like the saucy vixen she is. While still cheap, I ended up with seven bottles, which put me out just over $14.

3. My son's first birthday party. While we're keeping it pretty chill, yo, the event inevitably adds extras to the grocery list.

Now, probably a normal person would say "okay, so you're going to be over budget this week. Relax, you have the money and it's not the end of the world."

However, I am not a normal person. I vascillate wildly between perfectionism and complete slackerdom. I struggle to live within the murky grey and stay away from the black and white, extreme, all or nothing thinking. Much like when I used to go from diet to diet, swearing to be all pure and then the next thing I know I wake up next to a credit card slip from Pizza Hut and find frosting smeared on my eyebrow.

So I'm obsessing over my Frutal F-up. I feel like the principal found out and he's coming to take me to his office for a paddling. (When I was in elementary school, our principal actually was allowed, for a time, to paddle kids! Shocking, no?) My husband, who does not necessarily view frugality as a positive thing (which could be a whole blog in and of itself-- Cheapskate and Not-so-much Mate? In fact, in the early days of our relationship, I kept finding pennies outside on the driveway. I finally mentioned it to him. Turns out he was THROWING THEM AWAY. That was thisclose to being a dealbreaker!) told me to lighten up. Actually, he said "you need to loosen up the hold on your Scrooge Purse."

I think he might be on to something. So I'm going to toss the proverbial pizza box in the recycling bin, scrub the frosting off my eyebrow, and enjoy the fact that our sweet little boy is turning one. I'll start the frugal thing again on Monday.

This Little Piggy...

So inspired by Broke 207's awesome giveaway and musings on found money, my baby having a cold which is keeping me from the parade of mom's groups that usually keeps me busy and reasonably sane during the days, and my love of creating random little pockets of money, I'm starting a little experiment of my own. I'm going to open a little bank account for all the found money-- the $1.40 I got this morning from the bottle redemption center, the $3 here and there I get from doing surveys online, the random Euros we have from our trip to Spain several years ago-- stuff like that. And I'm going to see how it adds up. And in case you are nerdy like me about little collections o' money, I'll keep a tally by the shiny little purple piggy bank icon on the right here.

Where do you find little extra pockets o' cash?

Maine Mall gift card?

So I got this email yesterday promising me a $10 gift card to Maine Mall if I bring in this email this Friday or Saturday. I've signed up for so much crap lately that I'm not sure how I got this, but I think it relates to targetmaine.com. In any case, it's probably too late to get one if you're not already signed up, but you can go here to get emails alerting you to future deals and coupons.

Whole Food Deals 2-10 to 2-16

Not too much going on as far as their advertised sales, but there is free yogurt!

Oikos Organic, Plain Nonfat Yogurt-- $1. Use the $1 off from the Jan/Feb Whole Deal, or just print one off here.

Garden of Eatin' Blue Corn Chips, 3 for $7. Use this coupon to get these bad boys for about $1.30 for a 9 oz. bag.

Muir Glen Organic Diced Tomatoes 14.5 oz., $1.50. Go here and print a coupon making these $1 a can if you buy 2.

Whole Foods has lots of other items on sale that they don't advertise that there are coupons available for-- I'll let you know if I find any other great deals.

Filthy good laundry detergent deal!

Thanks to Organic Deals and Coupons for pointing out this great deal on BabyGanics Laundry Detergent at Toys R Us and Babies R Us. I know it's for babies, but really, does that mean grownups can't use it too?

So the 35 load container is on sale this week for $4.99, and you can print off this coupon that will take $3 off each container, making it just $1.99 per bottle. The coupon automatically takes the $3 off each-- you don't have to have a separate one for each bottle. On Saturday I bought the last 3 at Babies R Us, but I went to Toys R Us today and there was quite a bit in stock.

Mesa Verde 1/2 off!

Go here to purchase Mesa Verde gift certificates for 1/2 off. This is a great deal!

Where do you get your coupons?

After the lady at Whole Foods asked me where I got all my coupons, I thought it'd make a nice post. So where do you find coupons?

* This is the obvious one-- the Sunday paper inserts. This one kills me because I used to work at the Press Herald and I'd end up with the back of my car full of Sunday Telegrams that I'd recycle... and I didn't even take a second glance at all those pretty, pretty inserts. So befriend your newspaper folks~ and maybe they'll give you extra inserts! Or at least find out where they recycle all their extra newspapers, and then follow them discreetly and pounce.

* Some stores, like Shaws, Whole Foods, and Babies R Us put out their own coupons.

* On the back of Hannaford receipts, or catalinas that you get when you buy other products at the grocery store.

* Recyclebank. This is pretty cool, but unfortunately Maine isn't participating currently. However, just by signing up you can get 100 points which can be redeemed for some cool coupons. (For awhile they had $2 off Cascadian Farms organic products which was great). You can also recycle your old computers or cell phones and earn points that way. They also are affiliated with Kashless which is like Freecycle. You can earn points for posting free items you no longer need, and for saving searches for things you're looking for. Pretty cool.

* Trading. If you'd told me a few months back that I'd be undertaking such ventures as trading coupons, I'd probably have thought you were nuts. But it's true. This is actually a great way to get coupons-- you can trade with friends or family, or you could join a great site like Afullcup.com and join an organized trading group. Or you could help revitalize this local group.

* Events. Hannaford has a Heart Health promotion going on this month, and they're promising coupons at these events. When I attended Dash of Diva last fall, I thought I'd died and gone to coupon heaven at the Hannaford booth. Plus it was so crowded no one seemed to notice I was helping myself to quite a few coupons. Go here to find the dates and times for a Hannaford near you.

* Rite Aid has a cool program called Video Values where you watch ads for their products and you earn coupons. I haven't gotten too excited about most of the coupons, but when you watch 20 you get a $5 off $20 at Rite Aid coupon. Even if you don't shop at Rite Aid, this could be a great way to shave some money off those fancy blue Portland trash bags that we all have to buy, or milk, or other staples. Or, you could just go here and get a $5 off $25.

* The Interwebs. Check out coupons.com, , RedPlum, SmartSource, , http://www.mambosprouts.com/, Target coupons for starters. Also many products' websites have coupons on them.

* Write a complimentary email to companies whose products you use frequently. Or, write a complaint. Oftentimes either will get you some free coupons. And if not, at least you might have made someone smile with your compliment. Or made them sob under their desk with your complaint.

How about you? Have you found other interesting ways to garner coupons?

Orgasmic... I mean Organic

Okay, so it's probably pretty clear by now that I get fairly excited by coupons. But what really gets my coupon boner going is getting healthy food inexpensively. And that's what I did today. At Shaw's, the Wild Harvest coupon books were expiring today and I had a couple of $3 off $10 spent in the Wild Harvest aisles.

So I got a bag of organic spinach, two bags of organic peaches, one of raspberries and one strawberries. I also got six ThinkFruit bars using the ThinkThin coupons I mentioned the other day, and four Lara bars ($1 off 2 Lara bar coupons were also in the Wild Harvest coupon booklet). I also had a $2 off Cascadian Farms product that I got from Recyclebank (upcoming post about Recyclebank) that I used on the raspberries. Grand total was $14 and change. Not bad for a bunch of healthy, minimally processed stuff.

Olivia's Organics coupon

Thanks to reader Sandy for letting me know about this coupon, good for $1 off any Olivia's Organics salads. It's a pdf and can be printed as many times as you'd like, and there's no expiration date. Olivia's salads are on sale this week at Hannaford and I believe at Whole Foods as well.

Lil' Giveaway

Okay, so I'm babystepping my way towards bigger giveaways, but here's what I've got. The winner receives five $1 off Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt coupons. These are on sale at Shaw's starting tomorrow for $1.29 for the 5.3oz., making for some cheap, healthy yogurt.

You can enter twice, and a winner will be chosen at random.

How to enter:
1. Become a follower of Portland Penny Pincher. Or leave me a comment if you already are a follower.
2. Leave me a comment telling me what you'd like to see on Portland Penny Pincher in the future.

Whole Foods Specials, 2-3-10 to 2-9-10

Hans meatballs-- $4.49. Use the $1 off from the Whole Deal and go here for another $1 off making these a saucy $2.49 instead of their regular $5.99.

Kettle Chips light salt potato chips-- 2 for $4. There was $1 off coupon in last Sunday's Smart Source insert (Sunday Telegram).

Stonyfield Farms coupons

Hi there,

Thanks to Organic Deals and Coupons for posting that Stonyfield Farms has reset their printable coupons. Go here http://www.stonyfield.com/register/ to pick these little pretties up.

The $.50 coupon for Oikos Greek yogurt should double at Shaws, and rumor is they'll be priced at just over $1.00 from this Friday to the following Thursday, making for some cheap yogurt.
